Birds and Bees Podcast

Birds and Bees Podcast is a sex positive education podcast with a specific goal in mind, to empower parents and couples to have sexual health conversations with each other and with their children. We strive to meet this goal by interviewing experts in their respective fields to provide listeners with tools to discuss topics in regards to: sexual development, building intimate connection, sexual health and healthy communication. We believe parents should have a source of reliable information they can turn to as they teach their kids about sexuality. Many parents feel they don’t know enough about sex to answer their child’s questions, how to bring up sexual topics, when to bring them up etc. We want this podcast to be your personal reference you can turn to when you have questions.

Al Vernacchio speaks candidly with Braxton about a topic that affects children and teens significantly, values and sexual health. Al is a sex educator who has over 25 years working with teen, parents and sexual health education.

He demonstrates ways parents can identify what values they have about anything, especially sex. Knowing these values has a huge impact on how to speak to your child about life. They explore the influence pornography, religion, media, and many other topics that affect our values, and outlook on sexual health. And who can have a coversation about sex and values without talking about shame, and how shame drives secrecy, problematic feelings and behavior.

Al identifies how we are all sexual beings, living in a sexual world and ways parents can support their children in understanding their bodies, their values in all aspects of their life, including their sexuality.

Today’s episode is a special release because it is the last week in April. The last week of April being infertility awareness week. This week was dedicated to infertility awareness by RESOLVE.org back in 1989 to bring awareness to this medical issue.

Dealing with infertility is more than being unable to have children. For many, it’s a loss of pregnancy, a loss of identity, a realization of a deep seeded fear, and expensive process, a grieving journey and it affects relationships in so many ways, especially in intimacy.

Monica Ashton is back on the show to talk to us about building intimacy during infertility. She covers six actions concepts a couple can use to improve their sexual intimacy. She also explores the way infertility affects intimacy.

Braxton Dutson and Alisha Worthington talk candidly about child sexual development from birth to adulthood and beyond. Alisha pulls from her many years as a sex educator, and as a mother of seven children, to answer common questions parents have about their child’s sexual development. Children go through many sexual developments such as: running around naked, masturbation, playing doctor, asking about sexual practices, just to name a few. Alisha and Braxton dive into some simple actions you can take as a parent to understand the development of your child and how to manage the feelings of uncertainty you may feel as a parent.

Because of the impossibility to pinpoint exact ages when kids and adolescents experience (or don’t experience) certain developments. We talk in approximate ages you may see certain behaviors.

Attention! Due to the nature of the topic, anatomically correct body terms are used in the show (ex. Penis, Vulva, Vagina etc.) as well as some examples of slang teens may ask their parents to define. The content of this show is meant to educate on a broad spectrum, and should not be used in lieu of a primary care physician. If you are concerned about your child’s development, please seek out individualized professional support.

I had a conversation with Paige Miller. She is a Nurse and Student Nurse Midwife currently studying the ways in which pregnant women get information about pregnancy. We discuss her passion for helping women be informed about all the changes and expectations of pregnancy, and what to ask your provider during your pregnancy.

In her research Paige has found a gap of information in regards to understanding healthy sexual practices during pregnancy. Paige and I uncover the myths, the facts, what to expect, and most importantly, How to increase intimacy and connection with your partner during the first, second and third trimester.

Braxton conducted an unofficial study of his own on Facebook, and reports his findings of "what you wish you would have known about pregnancy." Paige identifies patterns women may see in pregnancy, and how to increase sexual satisfaction during and after pregnancy.

Attention: This episode is to support you in understanding the facts, myths, possible expectations of pregnancy and how to continue improving intimacy with your partner. Each person's experience is different, and the information in this podcast is not to be used as a substitute for expert medical advice. Contact your provider for specific questions about your pregnancy.

Braxton caught up with a human sexuality researcher, Shaun Miller, to discuss the methods parents can use to help develop sexual resiliency. Braxton divulges his embarrassing prom night "at the door" experience. They present methods to teach personal values to your children and how to use real-life experiences to support your teens.  Shaun discusses how "showing up" as a parent and choosing to support your child in decision making and autonomy help develop resiliency. Two research articles were brought to the table to help identify how schools are supporting resiliency development. Ultimately they discover the keys to failure, value development, and allowing for growth.

Birds and Bees Podcast goes live for the first time! After presenting for The Rocky Mountain Sex Summit in 2017. Al Vernacchio and Utha's Planned Parenthood Teen Counsel made themselves available for an evening of unscripted questions. Some of the qusetions asked were:

How professionals can be gender supportive in their assessments and questions to teens.

If a child has been exposed to sex prematurely, will they be ok?

Is there any difference between Herpes 1 and 2?

How can I talk to my teen about sex without it being uncomfortable?

How do you work with parents where morality trumps evidence based sex ed?

How do I respect my child’s boundaries about talking about sex when they are resistant to talking about it.

Do you have any resources for teens or children diagnosed with high functioning autism?

Internationally renowned sex therapist Marty Klein, Ph.D. spoke with Braxton about pornography in relationships. Marty Klein brings more than 30 years of sex therapy experience to this episode and how he has seen pornography show up in relationships and in the therapy office. Dr. Klein explains porn literacy and what everyone needs to know about pornography. Marty identifies what couples need when pornography is an issue in the relationship, how they can respond to uncomfortable topics and situations and how couples can decide they are "OK" with their values and decisions.

Marty and Braxton discuss sex education and how pornography has been affecting children's views of sexuality and sexual expression and how sex education affects children's outlook on pornography.

Braxton and Dr. Klein explored the actions of Ted Bundy, and Brian David Mitchell (Elizabeth Smart's Kidnapper) and their claims that pornography lead them to their actions.

Dr. Klein identified what couples DO want in a sexual relationship and pitfalls couples frequently experience as they try to achieve what they feel sex "should" be. They explored points of view that provide ways for couples to experience their optimal sexual health.

Braxton explores conversational IQ and how to develop with Lyn Christian M-BIT, Coach. This episode is a continuation from last week’s discussion. Braxton and Lyn discussed making your priorities the priority in the last episode. In this hour they combine your priorities with getting what you want in conversations with Conversational IQ. Lyn discusses the ways to invite communication vs trying to force a conversation. Conversational IQ is used in family dynamics, sales, customer support, and any other situation where you want to understand someone and have them listen to you. Lyn covers the levels of conversation, 6 functions of your brain, and how to use your head, heart, and gut to develop C-IQ. Braxton and Lyn explore how to use C-IQ to continually have constructive conversations with your partner, child, teen, colleagues, and loved ones.

Many of the tools and references were made from Judith E Glasser’s book Conversational Intelligence
