Birds and Bees Podcast

Birds and Bees Podcast is a sex positive education podcast with a specific goal in mind, to empower parents and couples to have sexual health conversations with each other and with their children. We strive to meet this goal by interviewing experts in their respective fields to provide listeners with tools to discuss topics in regards to: sexual development, building intimate connection, sexual health and healthy communication. We believe parents should have a source of reliable information they can turn to as they teach their kids about sexuality. Many parents feel they don’t know enough about sex to answer their child’s questions, how to bring up sexual topics, when to bring them up etc. We want this podcast to be your personal reference you can turn to when you have questions.

Shaun Miller Human Sexuality Researcher

Braxton caught up with a human sexuality researcher, Shaun Miller, to discuss the methods parents can use to help develop sexual resiliency. Braxton and Shaun explore the complexities of developing traits such as resiliency and courage in children, let alone in a sexual context. Braxton divulges his embarrassing prom night "at the door" experience. They present methods to teach personal values to your children and how to use real-life experiences to support your teens.  Shaun discusses how "showing up" as a parent and choosing to support your child in decision making and autonomy help develop resiliency. Two research articles were brought to the table to help identify how schools are supporting resiliency development. Ultimately they discover the keys to failure, value development, and allowing for growth.

Birds and Bees Podcast goes live for the first time! After presenting for The Rocky Mountain Sex Summit in 2017. Al Vernacchio and Utha's Planned Parenthood Teen Counsel made themselves available for an evening of unscripted questions. Al and the Teens fielded questions from parents and teens about sexuiality, gender, "the talk," and overall sex education. Birds and Bees was ready with the recording equipment and that leads us to Episode 014.

Some of the qusetions asked were:

How professionals can be gender supportive in their assessments and questions to teens.

If a child has been exposed to sex prematurely, will they be ok?

Is there any difference between Herpes 1 and 2?

How can I talk to my teen about sex without it being uncomfortable?

How do you work with parents where morality trumps evidence based sex ed?

How do I respect my child’s boundaries about talking about sex when they are resistant to talking about it.

Do you have any resources for teens or children diagnosed with high functioning autism?

Internationally renowned sex therapist Marty Klein, Ph.D. spoke with Braxton about pornography in relationships. Marty Klein brings more than 30 years of sex therapy experience to this episode and how he has seen pornography show up in relationships and in the therapy office. Dr. Klein explains porn literacy and what everyone needs to know about pornography. Marty identifies what couples need when pornography is an issue in the relationship, how they can respond to uncomfortable topics and situations and how couples can decide they are "OK" with their values and decisions.

Marty and Braxton discuss sex education and how pornography has been affecting children's views of sexuality and sexual expression and how sex education affects children's outlook on pornography.

Braxton and Dr. Klein explored the actions of Ted Bundy, and Brian David Mitchell (Elizabeth Smart's Kidnapper) and their claims that pornography lead them to their actions.

Dr. Klein identified what couples DO want in a sexual relationship and pitfalls couples frequently experience as they try to achieve what they feel sex "should" be. They explored points of view that provide ways for couples to experience their optimal sexual health.

Conversational IQ is used in family dynamics, sales, customer support, and any other situation where you want to understand someone and have them listen to you. Lyn covers the levels of conversation, 6 functions of your brain, and how to use your head, heart, and gut to develop C-IQ. Braxton and Lyn explore how to use C-IQ to continually have constructive conversations with your partner, child, teen, colleagues, and loved ones.

Many of the tools and references were made from Judith E Glasser’s book Conversational Intelligence

Tina Schermer Sellers is our latest guest on Birds and Bees Podcast. She is on the show today to talk about her experience, and research around sexuality and religious beliefs. Tina gives a brief history of sexual shame in religion, talks about the purity movement, and her reasoning behind writing the book "Sex, God and the Conservative Church."

In her history research she explains the Vow of 'Onah and what this means for women being respected as sexual being, and what is expected of men. (My mind was blown learning of this vow ancient vow).

Tina goes on to identify ways to heal sexual shame (Beit from religious context or another source). She also speaks directly to parents about having 100 one-minute conversations with your children about sex. She explains how this process works and what research tells us about these minute conversations. Dr. Sellers has amazing insight and advice on how parents can teach religious values, while avoiding sexually shaming your children, while building you relationship with your children.

And for couples she addresses how to build anticipation, desire, and intimacy in a relationship, even when you are choosing to be celibate before marriage.

How do we fit all of this into a 40-minute show? Space time manipulation .... but for real, she has so much information on such a huge subject. The show is exciting from start to finish.
