Birds and Bees Podcast

Birds and Bees Podcast is a sex positive education podcast with a specific goal in mind, to empower parents and couples to have sexual health conversations with each other and with their children. We strive to meet this goal by interviewing experts in their respective fields to provide listeners with tools to discuss topics in regards to: sexual development, building intimate connection, sexual health and healthy communication. We believe parents should have a source of reliable information they can turn to as they teach their kids about sexuality. Many parents feel they don’t know enough about sex to answer their child’s questions, how to bring up sexual topics, when to bring them up etc. We want this podcast to be your personal reference you can turn to when you have questions.

How would you like to know when you're being manipulated? Have you ever felt like you were manipulated in a relationship? Chances are you, and everyone else you know has felt manipulated at one time or another. What if I were to tell you that you're being manipulated right now? Yes, the people you interact with on a daily basis are manipulating you! But wait, there's more. YOU manipulate too! That's right. Humans manipulate each other each and every day whether we realize it or not.
In this episode, we talk about forms of manipulation and how to recognize them. Now we often talk about manipulation as a bad/negative thing that only mean people do. While manipulation can be used as a tool for control it can also be a tool used for good in a relationship.
Peter Monson was trained as a US army interrogator and works in politics and communications. He has a simple and effective way of identifying how manipulation takes on different forms using Marvel Characters, specifically Spiderman, The Hulk, and Thor.
We talk on the show today about what manipulation is damaging in a relationship, and what manipulation techniques can take you from a win/lose situation to a win/win situation which can positively affect your relationship for years to come. Manipulation can be very harmful and damaging (like the Hulk getting the bad guy) and we are not trying to downplay the harm someone can do with manipulation. We are advocating for collaborative manipulation and using methods to improve your relationship with your children, your partner, your wife, your husband, and anyone else you interact with on a daily basis.
Do you agree with the signs we point out? Do you think manipulation can ever be a positive thing? Let us know by calling 385-449-1818 or texting us at that number.

Braxton worked on a collaborative podcast with Digital Adventure Crew. Their YouTube channel creates fun videos with crazy skits as well as interesting conversations on their podcast "digital adventure radio." They were interested in talking to Braxton about "The Talk" how he became a therapist and about the upcoming world record mustard drinking event that Braxton is putting on. This interview is interesting because they are interviewing Braxton about his start, how he got to be a therapist, how he knows the DAC, and why he is attempting to drink over 18 ounces of mustard in under 30 seconds for the world record.

The coolest part of this episode is you can watch Braxton and the crew making this podcast if you search Digital Adventure radio on YouTube and look for the birds and bees podcast collaboration. You get to see all the reactions, and the interview! Head on over and check out the video of this recording.

Let me know what you think of the collaborations and the "candid conversations" segments of Bird and Bees Podcast. I am excited to bring you more content like this in the future.

Braxton speaks with Elliott Kronenfeld, LICSW, CST about his work with couples. Elliott discusses couples by default versus couples by intention. Frequently couples find themselves wondering why they are in a relationship or why they are feeling stuck in boring pattern. Many turn to sex and love to be the "glue" in their relationship. While those two aspects in a relationship are important Elliott offers options for couples that want to build their relationship to last and are looking for the strengthening bond to help their relationship go the distance.

In his book "couples by intention" Elliott explores a 2 column exercise couples can use. He speaks about strategic relationships and curiosity, speaking from "I" in communication, and how "Intimacy is the Balance of Safety and vulnerability."

Braxton learns about "The no helping rule" which helps couples improve their avoidance of assumptions and damaging expectations.

They explore the influence pornography, religion, media, and many other topics that affect our values, and outlook on sexual health. And who can have a coversation about sex and values without talking about shame, and how shame drives secrecy, problematic feelings and behavior.

Al identifies how we are all sexual beings, living in a sexual world and ways parents can support their children in understanding their bodies, their values in all aspects of their life, including their sexuality.

Today’s episode is a special release because it is the last week in April. The last week of April being infertility awareness week. This week was dedicated to infertility awareness by RESOLVE.org back in 1989 to bring awareness to this medical issue.

Dealing with infertility is more than being unable to have children. For many, it’s a loss of pregnancy, a loss of identity, a realization of a deep seeded fear, and expensive process, a grieving journey and it affects relationships in so many ways, especially in intimacy.

Monica Ashton is back on the show to talk to us about building intimacy during infertility. She covers six actions concepts a couple can use to improve their sexual intimacy. She also explores the way infertility affects intimacy.

Braxton Dutson and Alisha Worthington talk candidly about child sexual development from birth to adulthood and beyond. Alisha pulls from her many years as a sex educator, and as a mother of seven children, to answer common questions parents have about their child’s sexual development. Children go through many sexual developments such as: running around naked, masturbation, playing doctor, asking about sexual practices, just to name a few. Alisha and Braxton dive into some simple actions you can take as a parent to understand the development of your child and how to manage the feelings of uncertainty you may feel as a parent.

Because of the impossibility to pinpoint exact ages when kids and adolescents experience (or don’t experience) certain developments. We talk in approximate ages you may see certain behaviors.

Attention! Due to the nature of the topic, anatomically correct body terms are used in the show (ex. Penis, Vulva, Vagina etc.) as well as some examples of slang teens may ask their parents to define. The content of this show is meant to educate on a broad spectrum, and should not be used in lieu of a primary care physician. If you are concerned about your child’s development, please seek out individualized professional support.

I had a conversation with Paige Miller. She is a Nurse and Student Nurse Midwife currently studying the ways in which pregnant women get information about pregnancy. We discuss her passion for helping women be informed about all the changes and expectations of pregnancy, and what to ask your provider during your pregnancy.

In her research Paige has found a gap of information in regards to understanding healthy sexual practices during pregnancy. Paige and I uncover the myths, the facts, what to expect, and most importantly, How to increase intimacy and connection with your partner during the first, second and third trimester.

Braxton conducted an unofficial study of his own on Facebook, and reports his findings of "what you wish you would have known about pregnancy." Paige identifies patterns women may see in pregnancy, and how to increase sexual satisfaction during and after pregnancy.

Attention: This episode is to support you in understanding the facts, myths, possible expectations of pregnancy and how to continue improving intimacy with your partner. Each person's experience is different, and the information in this podcast is not to be used as a substitute for expert medical advice. Contact your provider for specific questions about your pregnancy.

Braxton Dutson discusses the complexities of sexual fluidity with Lisa M. Diamond Professor of Psychology and gender studies and Author of Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women's Love and Desire (2008).

Lisa identifies how her research lead to a greater understanding of Sexual Fluidity, and understanding the complexities that are often overlooked in a "straight, Gay or Bi society." Lisa identifies ways parents can best react to their children who are dealing with changes to their sexual identity. She gives meaningful suggestions on how to best address the array of emotions that can come during this time.

We discuss how sexual preference is impacted, how homosexual, bisexual, and heterosexual individuals all experience Sexual Fluidity to one degree or another. We specifically discuss parental concerns and experiences, and how to apply the LEAD with Love principles to continue building loving relationships with your loved ones as you both process the changes occurring.
